I mentioned about building a cabinet to display some of my collection back here. My home renovation was completed nearly 2 months ago, but I only had time recently to start putting things together in the display cabinet. From the blueprint design to the completed cabinet: And more recently to this: There's still quite a bit of tidying up to do though. I have another shelf that I need to put up some background scenery. It took me a couple of hours to wallpaper the sides of the cabinet. I had installed a dehumidifier unit and also an electric socket inside the cabinet and I had to cut around these units. Well, it's a labour of love. I hope in a few more months I can share photos of the finished project.

Christmas went by like a flash, and in a matter of days, 2013 is ahead of us. I wasn't sure whether I will have time to drop this little note before midnight strikes, but I did.
Hope you are having fun ringing in the new year! This song keeps repeating around my head nowadays. It's hot and humid here. How I wish that I can watch the snowflakes fall on Christmas day, the fire crackling behind me, while I sip on a hot chocolate (with marshmallow). If you are staying home for Christmas, have a merry one with your friends and loved ones. If you are going away for Christmas, enjoy the holidays! What are your plans for this year's Halloween? The critters at my Sylvanian village usually like to have a party. A sweets party: candies, cakes, tarts, chocolates, and all sorts of yummy dessert treats. It's a great excuse to indulge. Wishing you all a Happy Halloween! I am renovating and count myself lucky that the husband supports the idea of building a display cabinet for my collection. To be precise, he did not say he agree but he also did not say he was unhappy about spending the money, so I took that as he is 100% fine with the idea. Needless to say, I am excited about this part of the home renovation. I received the first drawing of the cabinet from the interior designer (ID) a few days ago: It's going to be about 28 meters high (as it will go all the way to the ceiling), 1.5 meters wide, and 0.6 meters deep. Only the middle part will have front panelings in glass to display things, and the rest are for storage. The ID gave me 6 shelvings to display my collection, all adjustable. The only minus point of this cabinet is that you can only see one side of a display, e.g. the front of a Sylvanian building and not the back.
I don't know what else I should include in the design of the display cabinet. It looks very standard to me. Perhaps I should have one shelving which I can pull out, so if someone wants to see what the back of the building look like, I can simply pull out the shelf for this purpose. Anyone has any good ideas? Tomorrow is the Chinese Mid-autumn festival. Where families will gather for dinner, and children will light the lanterns afterwards and walk the neighbourhoods showing off their colorful patterned lanterns. Mooncakes are traditionally eaten during the festival, and one can admire the full bright moon that falls on the 15th day of August of the Chinese lunar calendar. Here is wishing everyone a happy Mid-autumn festival! I had the opportunity to go to Bangkok recently with the hubby, and this time we did not take our little girl along for the holiday. So, yes! I would be able to go to Jatujak weekend market (imagine dragging a toddler through a crowded market and expecting her to stay by your side while you shift through items to buy), and hunt for some miniature dollhouse items which my Sylvanians can use. I was lucky enough to arrive in Bangkok by Saturday evening, which meant that I can still go to Jatujak on Sunday since the weekend market is, well, closed during weekdays. Aside from Thai food, which I love and have not been able to have much of it when going out to eat with a toddler, the highlight of the trip was the visit to Jatujak. Sure it was hot, it was quite crowded, and the market place was so big that you can walk the entire day visiting each stall and not finish. But it was a lot of fun to shop at Jatujak...surprisingly more fun than my shopping trip afterwards at the Siam Paragon. I started early to beat the post-lunch crowd (it gets even more crazy after lunch), and with the help of Ms. Pornphan from the Sylvanian Families World facebook group, I was able to zero-in and locate the miniatures stalls within the spacious weekend market. Missbunny also travelled with me to Bangkok. Here is a picture of her with a miniature mahjong set that I bought from the market. After one try, Missbunny concluded that she like playing mahjong.
So happy (and a little stressed.....just a teeny weeny bit) to receive my shipment of Sylvanian Families goodies. I was finally able to complete my JP Beagle Dog family. There was also a Hello Kitty traditional sentō (Japanese bathhouse) that I could not resist to get, and they are at the right scale for Sylvanian Families.
The stressful part is how to store these additional items in my house. Oh well, I'm sure I'll find a way somehow. Hope I will be able to take photos soon of my latest goodies and share with you all here. My very first Sylvanian Families were toys that my niece wanted to discard. She no longer wanted to play with them, so I rescued them thinking that I can save them for my then 2 year-old daughter to play. There was a two-storey house that I later learned is the Lakehouse Lodge. Not sure whether it was the JP or UK release as it did not come with any box. Furnitures for the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room. The second-hand figures that I inherited were Periwinkle milk rabbit sister, Cottontail rabbit standing baby, and an incomplete JP Maron Dog family. The first family that I bought was the Cottontail Rabbit family. Since then, I learned that there are different versions of Sylvanian Families, and cupped hands versus flat hands. There's no way I can collect all the families released, not to mention that I don't have the space to store everything that I wanted to buy and my pockets are not deep enough. I decided then to get mainly JP families, and only those that I really like. This helps to keep my collection to figures that I find very cute and I love. My new resolve, haha. |
About MeI like to experiment with photography and dabble in crafty things. I started collecting Sylvanian Families in 2009 and hope that someday my little daughter will enjoy playing and collecting Sylvanian Families as much as I do. Archives
